The next day, Evie wakes.

I’ve never been happier or more relieved in my life. Not only can I finally breathe, knowing my sister is alive and well, but her being awake means my plan with Cobalt can now move forward.

The only thing that could make me happier right now is if I could share my joy with Evie. It takes all my effort not to tell her everything at the first sign that her eyes begin fluttering open. Even as we speak and catch up on all she’s missed—which isn’t much, aside from my boring talks with the king and the newest addition to my list of handsome wine servants—I find myself nearly blurting out the truth time and time again. All this sneaking around is new to me. I’ve never kept anything from my sister before now, and it nearly kills to hide something so big, something that can change both our lives for the better.

But I made a promise to Cobalt, and I know how seriously the fae take promises. Besides, now that Evie’s awake, Cobalt will tell me the rest of his plan. The truth can’t possibly remain hidden much longer.

I’m nearly squealing with overwhelming joy at dinner that night, so much so that I can barely eat. Evie wasn’t feeling well enough to join, which does dampen my happiness a bit, considering I’m left alone with a silent King Aspen. My delight plummets even further when dinner comes to an end and Cobalt still hasn’t returned from speaking privately with my sister. What could he have possibly needed to say that couldn’t have been said in front of me?

I’m sure he’s just keeping up appearances, I remind myself over and over as I walk down the hall to the king’s study. I tolerate yet another chat with him, sparking small talk over Evie’s recovery. Despite Cobalt’s insistence that I keep Aspen from suspecting our motives, I can’t help but plant subtle hints, promise or not.

After sitting with the king for an hour, I’ve all but run out of hope that I’ll see Cobalt at all tonight. But just as I’m about to round the corner toward my bedroom, Cobalt is there waiting for me. His lips pull into a grin so beautiful, I forget for a moment that I’m cross with him.

I don a pout. “Where were you?”

He ignores the question, instead taking me by the wrist and pulling me down the hall. We pass no one as we hurry along in silence, taking turn after turn, only slowing once I recognize the corridor where Cobalt and I shared our stolen kisses…and then some. My cheeks grow warm as I recall his hands all over me, smoothing over the bodice of my gown, lips trailing down my neck. Of course, just as things were getting interesting last night, he pulled away, reminding me it wouldn’t be safe for us to get caught together. My heart races as I wonder if he’s brought me here to pick up where we left off.
